Astrakhan Oblast and Iran are expanding their partnership in the sphere of international cargo transportation. Iranian shipping company IRISL, which has established a subsidiary structure "Astraport Shipping" in Astrakhan, intends to deepen cooperation with the Astrakhan region.
During the meeting between Denis Afanasiev, Vice-Governor of the region, and Mohammadreza Modarres-Hiabani, General Director of IRISL, the initiative of the Iranian side to organize joint agency activities in the ports in the south of Iran was discussed. Denis Afanasiev supported the proposal of Iranian partners and expressed the region's readiness to expand cooperation not only in the south, but also in the north of Iran. The proposal was made during the discussion of joint work on the development of the international transport corridor "North-South".
Mr. Moddares-Hiabani and Vice-Governor Denis Afanasiev also discussed the possibility of developing cargo transportation through the territory of Iran, which, according to the Vice-Governor, will allow to form a single multimodal transport flow.
Afanasiev noted that Iran is a key partner of the Astrakhan Oblast - more than 95% of cargoes passing through regional ports are directed to this country. The region is interested in further joint development of the international transport corridor "North-South", the cargo turnover along which by 2030 can almost double - from 17 to 32 million tons.
The North-South International Transport Corridor is a 7.2 thousand km multimodal route that will connect St. Petersburg with the ports of Iran and India. The western and eastern branches of the ITC pass through Iran: the western branch provides for transportation through Iran by road via Resht, the eastern branch - by rail. The final point in Iran is the port of Bandar Abbas, from which cargo can be delivered to India by sea. The western branch also passes through Azerbaijan, while the eastern branch passes through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. In addition, direct sea transportation from Russia via the Caspian Sea to Iran is possible.
