The North-South International Transport Corridor is intended to ensure Russia's foreign trade with the Caspian region, the Persian Gulf, Transcaucasia, Iran, India and Africa. However, the project has not been fully realized at present.
The revitalization of the ports' cargo turnover was mainly due to the Russian-Iranian foreign trade. In the future, Iran is expected to join the EAEU free trade zone, as well as the development of Iran's trade relations with Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. In addition, it is planned that Afghanistan will invest in the construction of three berths in the port of Enzeli in northern Iran. The development of the trans-Caspian route is to be expected in the coming years.
In addition to the development of the North-South ITC, Kyrgyzstan has taken the initiative to create the Southern Transport Corridor along the route Russia - Caspian Sea - Turkmenistan - Uzbekistan - China. The route is being laid through the port of Turkmenbashi with a subsequent point to the port of Astrakhan. The creation of such infrastructure will strengthen ties with Central Asian neighbors and increase foreign trade turnover.
