Igor Babushkin, Governor of the Astrakhan Region, took part in KazanForum, where he presented the opportunities of the North-South ITC. The corridor connects St. Petersburg with the ports of Iran and India, passing through the Astrakhan Oblast.
At the forum, Babushkin emphasized the growth of cargo turnover along the corridor, noting that 20% of cargoes fall on the trans-Caspian section. The region is actively attracting partners for joint projects, including the Russian-Turkmen flour milling complex.
Stable foreign trade relations are maintained with Iran. Up to 90% of all cargoes passing through the Astrakhan region go in the Iranian direction. A Trade House of Iran and a branch of an Iranian bank have been opened in Astrakhan. Cargoes from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and the Republic of Belarus also transit through the region to Russia and in the opposite direction
The Governor expressed interest in expanding cooperation with African countries (South Africa, Eritrea) and Asian countries (Iraq, Malaysia, Pakistan, Afghanistan) along the corridor.
At the round table "Russia - Azerbaijan" Babushkin noted the role of the Astrakhan region in cargo transportation between the countries. The region serves the goods traffic from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and India, which follows the railroad tracks "Astara - Baku - Astrakhan". The head of the region offered his colleagues from Azerbaijan to more actively use the sea route along the Caspian Sea for delivery of goods in both directions.
According to the governor, all conditions have been created for building up ties with neighboring countries. The potential of Astrakhan ports is currently 16 million tons, and the largest container terminal in the south of the country is being created in the port economic zone.
