Governor Igor Babushkin informed the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin that Astrakhan shipyards have received orders for two years ahead. The growth of orders has led to an increase in the shipbuilding industry's contribution to the region's economy.
During a video conference with the president, the governor said, "Thanks to your decision to restore the shipbuilding industry's capacity in 2019, it is again playing a significant role in the region's economy. And today, the Astrakhan region is a leader in terms of production capabilities to create complex facilities and technical means to work on offshore oil fields. About four thousand workers are employed in the industry today, and our shipyards are provided with orders for two years ahead".
Babushkin emphasized that the modern fleet plays a key role in increasing the volume of cargo transportation through the Volga-Caspian Sea Shipping Channel.
"Just last year our shipbuilders laid down container ships and dry cargo ships #00108 - the type that can operate on the Caspian Sea, as the Caspian Sea is quite shallow. At the same time they can carry both liquid and bulk cargoes, oil cargoes. It is very important that the ship modernization program is continued," said the Governor of the Astrakhan Region.
