Russia and Azerbaijan have set up a bilateral working group on the Caspian Sea shoaling, the press service of the Russian government reported.
The working group, consisting of representatives of specialized ministries and agencies, research institutes of Russia and Azerbaijan, will study the problem of shoaling of the Caspian Sea.
The decision to create the group was made following the meeting of President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on August 19, 2024, during which the parties discussed issues related to the shoaling of the Caspian Sea.
In pursuance of the agreements reached at the highest level, on September 17, 2024, the co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Azerbaijan, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexey Overchuk and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Shahin Mustafayev, considered problems related to the Caspian Sea shoaling, options for developing future scenarios of level change and relevant adaptation measures, and agreed on the establishment of a bilateral economic cooperation agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
On October 2, 2024, the working group was formed - Sergey Anoprienko, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation, and Rauf Hajiyev, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, were appointed as co-chairmen. The group includes representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Federal Water Resources Agency of Russia, the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan, specialized agencies and research institutes of the two countries.
In the format of joint work, the specialists will develop an action plan that will include such measures as research into the causes of Caspian Sea level change, short- and long-term forecasts, adaptation strategies, monitoring of water level fluctuations, joint scientific research, and other steps aimed at reducing the negative impact on coastal areas.
